World Cup 2014 : Fifa suspends Nigeria Football Federation for government interference

Fifa on Wednesday suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect over "government interference". The decision, in the aftermath of Nigeria's World Cup last 16 loss, came after a court sacked the NFF and the government appointed a sole administrator for football in the country, shortly after the Super Eagles returned from Brazil. "The Fifa Emergency Committee has decided to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference," a Fifa statement explained. Unless the suspension is lifted Nigeria will not be able to play in the upcoming Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup scheduled for August 5-24 in Canada. Nigerians on Wednesday expressed shock and disappointment over the suspension. The country's U-17 team, who are the defending world champions, are also in danger of missing out on the African Junior Championship next year in Niger as they have a qualifying match on J

Finance minister Arun Jaitley, who presented his first Union Budget on Thursday, said he carefully examined every issue in the 45 days the new government has been in power to ensure he addressed any unresolved problems. "I have not indulged in any form of criticism of the former government I have looked at the unresolved issue and problems and I have tried to address these problems," he said in an interview. Excerpts: On the retrospective tax issue and the Vodafone case: I have tried to look into all the unresolved problems that were left by the previous government and I have tried to address each of them.
